We strongly recommend downloading map data during your planning phase if you’re working off-grid due to the lack of terrestrial infrastructure.
- Click the Maps icon in the ATAK toolbar
- Click the “MOBILE” tab at the top
- Click the arrow at the bottom of the screen, then click “Select Area”
- Chose one of the following options:

- Rectangle - You will select three points on the map when drawing the rectangle. The first two points are on one side of the rectangle, and the third point is the depth of the rectangle.
- Free Form - You can drop as many points as you’d like to capture the area you want.
- Lasso - You can draw a circle around the area you want to download.
- Map Select - Select a shape on the map to download the area within the shape. Example: If you import a .KMZ file with a circle or rectangle around your area of operations, you could select the shape and download the area outlined with the shape.
Note: If the selected area is inaccurate, click the “Cancel” button or the back button and retry your selection.
- Rectangle - You will select three points on the map when drawing the rectangle. The first two points are on one side of the rectangle, and the third point is the depth of the rectangle.
- Select the map source you want to download, then choose the detail range/depth from coarse to fine. Each level displays the level of detail for each tile level. Notice how the number of tiles shown on the right increases as you select a finer detailed tile level.
Note: You can’t download more than 300,000 tiles to a single tileset.
- Choose one of the following options:

- Create a new tileset - You will be prompted to input the “New Layer Name” or tileset name. The download will begin after clicking “OK”
- Add to existing tileset - You will be shown a list of existing tilesets to choose from. The download will begin after you make a selection.
- Create a new tileset - You will be prompted to input the “New Layer Name” or tileset name. The download will begin after clicking “OK”
